The Truth About Our Entertainment Addiction | I Wasn't Ready For This

Christian entertainment, media addiction, idolatry, spiritual warfare, dopamine, social media, movies, gaming, sports and the battle for our attention — this interview went somewhere I did not expect. I want to admit something right up front: this conversation did not go the way I thought it was going to go. I invited author Keith A. Robinson onto Broadcasting Seeds primarily to talk about his work in apologetics fiction — using science fiction and adventure stories to explore Christianity, creation, evolution, world religions and the defense of the Christian faith. Then Keith brought up the book he wrote with his wife April, Entertainment Junkies. And the entire conversation changed. What started as a discussion about books turned into a challenging examination of entertainment, attention, addiction, idolatry and the things Christians willingly allow into their minds and homes. I found myself processing some of these ideas while we were talking. Keith asks a difficult question: What if the problem isn't only what we're watching? What if it's how much of our lives we're giving to entertainment? We talk about movies, television, streaming, social media, video games, sports, music, fantasy, Christian entertainment, The Chosen, churches using entertainment to attract people, dopamine, parenting, pornography, beauty standards and the effect repeated images and messages may have on the way we think. Keith also shares a very personal story about his own children and why he now wishes he had approached entertainment differently as a father. One of the strongest ideas in the conversation is his challenge to take a 31-day break from entertainment and replace some of that consumption with what he and April call: “Do something real with someone real.” Walking. Talking. Helping someone. Creating something. Spending time outside. Sharing a meal. Building actual relationships. And then the conversation goes places I absolutely did not anticipate — including biblical imagery, beauty standards, cosmetics, pornography and the Book of Enoch. I'm still thinking about this conversation. You may agree with Keith. You may strongly disagree with parts of what he says. You may land somewhere in the middle. But I think the question itself deserves consideration: Has entertainment become so normal that we no longer recognize how much it is shaping us?
