I Love 1994: Johnny Cash & Bush

Continuing our I Love the 90s series, we move on to 1994, the year a white Bronco led police across Los Angeles and Tonya Harding's camp clubbed Nancy Kerrigan's leg ahead of the Lillehammer Olympics. Don and Dude drop the needle on one stripped down country comeback and one guitar heavy alternative rock debut, connecting both records to a world of the World Cup landing on American soil, Friends premiering on NBC, and Woodstock '94 turning to mud in upstate New York.

The Albums

Johnny Cash – American Recordings (1994)

After Columbia dropped him and his career went cold, Rick Rubin promised Cash total creative freedom and recorded him alone with just his acoustic guitar, moving from the murder ballad "Delia's Gone" through Nick Lowe's "The Beast in Me" and Glenn Danzig's "Thirteen" to Loudon Wainwright III's "The Man Who Couldn't Cry." The stark, one guitar sound won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and launched a series of Rubin produced records that carried through the rest of Cash's life.

Bush – Sixteen Stone (1994)

Formed in London by Gavin Rossdale and Nigel Pulsford, Bush built their debut at Westside Studios with producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, filtering American grunge through Rossdale's love of the Pixies and David Bowie across singles like "Everything Zen," "Comedown," "Machinehead" and "Glycerine." Released in the U.S. in November 1994 and quickly compared to Nirvana, it became one of the best selling rock debuts of the decade.

The Oakland post metal band's first album in a decade, released as a surprise in March, adds Isis's Aaron Turner to the lineup and turns personal upheaval, isolation and climate despair into crushing, cathartic music across eight songs.

Pearl Jam – Vitalogy (1994):

Pearl Jam's third album trades the polished accessibility of Ten and Vs. for a more abrasive, experimental sound that balances hooks like "Corduroy" and "Better Man" against the band's growing discomfort with fame.

Black Marble – Life in Small Spaces (2026):

Chris Stewart's fifth Black Marble album, and his first full length since 2021's Fast Idol, is another entirely self written, performed and recorded entry in his long running synth and cold wave project.

Neo Dimes – Alone (2026):

Denver musician Stephen Edmunds's debut full length as Neo Dimes blends darkwave, industrial rock and synthpop textures born from becoming a father and losing his job at the same time, feeding an album focused on isolation, technology and grief.
