Marriage and Menopause Podcast Episode 26: Brain Fog

Marriage and Menopause Podcast Episode 26: Brain Fog

Menopause brain fog took the one thing Judy never worried about losing.

She taught for twenty two years and did math in her head faster than her students could do it on paper. Then she started standing in doorways trying to remember the sentence she walked down the hall to say.

In this episode we talk about what brain fog actually is, and it isn't forgetting. The information is still in there. You just can't get to it.

Judy walks through the files she worked and lost, the clients she'd already talked to and couldn't place, and the night she started searching early onset symptoms at fifty two.She never told David any of that. She brought him a study instead.

We get into what the research actually shows. Lisa Mosconi's team at Weill Cornell scanned a hundred sixty one women between forty and sixty five and found gray matter volume drops during perimenopause in the exact regions that run attention, concentration, language and memory. It's measurable. It's visible on a scan. And in eight years of appointments, nobody said a word about it to either of us.

David says what he's been sitting on since he heard it.

Judy also talks about what she built instead of a diagnosis. Whiteboards, notebooks in every room, a calendar that holds everything, and a husband who works as the second copy. And the letter she wrote asking for help at work, the one she sent to David first to ask if she should send it at all.

She's postmenopausal now. The fog didn't lift. She runs a full book of business, this podcast and a household anyway.

If you're a woman over forty losing words in the middle of your own sentences, you're not broken and you're not early onset anything. You're in it.
