A discarded Falcon 9 rocket stage just crashed into the Moon at thousands of miles per hour, leaving behind a new crater roughly 60 feet across.

And somehow, that's not even the craziest part of this story.

Earth is already surrounded by dead satellites, spent rocket stages, fragments from collisions and explosions, and millions of smaller pieces of orbital debris traveling fast enough to seriously damage spacecraft.

So Beard Laws and Luther Grimwood open the file on a slightly terrifying question:

Could humans accidentally create so much space junk that we make it dangerously difficult to leave Earth?
