Episode 133: Operation Paperclip — How America Recruited the Nazis

At the end of World War Two, as Allied forces moved through Germany and the concentration camps were liberated and the full horror of the Nazi regime became undeniable, the United States government made a decision. Hundreds of Nazi scientists — specialists in rocketry, aeronautics, chemical weapons, biological agents, and advanced weapons technology — would be brought to the United States, given new identities, expunged records, and employment in American military and civilian research programmes. Operation Paperclip, as it was code-named, imported more than 1,600 German and Austrian scientists into the United States between 1945 and 1959. Its most famous product was the American space programme: Wernher von Braun, former SS officer and developer of the V-2 rocket that killed thousands of British civilians, became the director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the chief architect of the Saturn V rocket that put men on the moon. Operation Paperclip is not a conspiracy theory. It is a declassified, documented, and extensively studied operation whose full implications have still not been fully absorbed.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine Operation Paperclip in detail — what it was, who was recruited, what crimes some of those recruits had committed, and what the long-term consequences of importing Nazi science and scientists into American institutions actually were.

The scale of the operation was extraordinary. The Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency, the body that managed Paperclip, recruited specialists across virtually every area of advanced military research. Hubertus Strughold, who was appointed chief of NASA's Space Medicine division, had conducted experiments on prisoners at Dachau. Kurt Blome, who led Germany's biological warfare programme and experimented with plague pathogens on concentration camp prisoners, was acquitted at Nuremberg and then recruited by the US Army to consult on chemical weapons. Walter Schreiber, chief of Germany's Army Medical Corps, who had overseen medical experiments on prisoners, was recruited and eventually given passage to Argentina when a Boston newspaper exposed his presence in the United States.

The mechanism by which these individuals' records were "cleaned" — their documented SS memberships and war crimes removed from intelligence files before their immigration status was processed — was not a series of individual oversights. It was systematic. Files were altered at the direction of JIOA director Bosquet Wev, who argued that the scientific value of the recruits outweighed the moral concerns. This argument was accepted at the highest levels of the War Department and subsequently of the Truman administration.
