Your ADHD Isn't a Disorder. It's a Ferrari Engine With No Track - EP 309

Your ADHD Isn't a Disorder. It's a Ferrari Engine With No Track - EP 309

When I was a kid I got diagnosed with ADD. Back then they called it something else but the story was the same. I couldn't sit still. I couldn't shut it off. My brain was going a hundred miles an hour in every direction at once, all day, every day. So the school did what schools do. They looked at my parents and said we think you should put him on medication, calm him down, get him to sit quietly in a chair like the other kids.

My parents said absolutely not.

My dad was blue collar, Metallica in the garage, Craftsman toolbox, figure-it-out kind of guy. My mom was Puerto Rican, salsa and movement in the house all the time. These were not soft people. And when the school said let's medicate your son so he's easier to manage, my dad basically said you're not sedating my kid so he's more convenient for you. We'll handle it. And here's how they handled it. They didn't try to make me calmer. They gave me somewhere to put it. At one point I was in five different sports at the same time. They kept me moving, they kept me challenged and my dad's whole thing was school is your job, do it well, then go burn the rest of that energy off on the field.

They didn't treat my intensity like a problem to dial down. They treated it like fuel that needed somewhere to go.

Here's what I've come to believe after living this myself. And let me be clear, because I'm a doctor. Some people genuinely need medication. That's a real medical decision made with a real physician and I'm not touching that. I'm talking to the other group, the big group, the ones using the diagnosis as an excuse for why they can't be successful. For a lot of you it was never a broken brain. It was a Ferrari engine sitting in a school desk in first gear, redlining, going nowhere. The problem was never too much energy. The problem was nobody gave that energy a track to run on.

This episode is about ADHD, intensity, and why the exact wiring people keep telling you to calm down is the thing that builds companies. Every person I know who has built something real is a little bit wired wrong by normal standards. The calm, easy-to-sit-next-to people are wonderful and they're usually working for the intense ones. But here's the catch. An engine with no track destroys itself. If you don't give that energy an outlet it doesn't disappear, it turns on you. It becomes anxiety, ten unfinished projects, lying awake at two in the morning with your brain screaming at you. The energy is coming out either way. The only question is whether you build the track or it tears up the whole car.

So stop trying to become the calmer person. You're not going to become the calmer person. Build the outlet instead. Structure means systems and real processes so your brain isn't the only thing holding the business together. It means hiring the calm, detail-obsessed operator who does the thing you'll never do, so you can run down field where you're actually valuable. And you still need the physical outlet, the gym, the sport, the place to dump the excess so it doesn't leak into your marriage or your team.

Stop treating your wiring like a diagnosis you're stuck with. Stop letting a label become the ceiling you build your whole life under. If you genuinely need help, go get it, no shame in that. But if you've got a powerful engine and no track, quit trying to sedate it, quit apologizing for it, and go build something big enough to hold all of it.

They didn't turn me down. They pointed me at the field and let me go.
