Why Gen X is So Burned Out at Work

Why Gen X is So Burned Out at Work

Why is Gen X so burned out at work? After decades of corporate America, constant connectivity, doing more with less, and watching work consume more and more of our lives, many Gen Xers are starting to question whether the tradeoff is still worth it.

My last YouTube video that published this past weekend on 8/16/26 and titled Why Gen X Is Quietly Done With Work, sparked hundreds of comments from people saying the same things: they’re exhausted, frustrated, counting the days until retirement, and increasingly unwilling to let work control their lives.

In this episode, I look at 8 reasons Gen X may be reaching a breaking point with work — including America’s unusual relationship with work and vacation, how technology made us constantly available, the corporate obsession with “doing more with less,” and why our perspective on time begins to change as we get older.

I also share something retirement taught me that I didn’t fully understand while I was still working: I didn’t necessarily want to stop working. I wanted work to stop owning my time.

Financial independence isn’t only about reaching a retirement number. Ultimately, it gives you something much more valuable: control over your time and the freedom to decide how you want to spend it.
