2 Kings 23 explained. What does 2 Kings 23 teach about wholehearted obedience, repentance, and the radical nature of genuine spiritual reform? In this episode we explore Josiah's covenant renewal, his destruction of Judah's idols, the fulfilment of prophecy against Bethel, and the tragic decline that follows his death.

After discovering the Book of the Law in the previous chapter, Josiah gathers the people of Judah and reads God's Word publicly. He then makes a covenant before the Lord to follow Him with all his heart and soul. The people join him in this commitment, beginning one of the most sweeping reforms in Judah's history.

Josiah does not stop at words.

He orders the removal of every object associated with Baal, Asherah, and the worship of the stars and heavenly bodies. He destroys pagan vessels, removes idolatrous priests, tears down high places, and defiles places of false worship so that they can no longer be used.

The reform even reaches into areas outside Jerusalem. Josiah travels to Bethel, the site where Jeroboam had established one of the golden calves centuries earlier. He destroys the altar and high place there, fulfilling a prophecy spoken generations earlier by a man of God in the days of Jeroboam.

One of the most remarkable details is that Josiah discovers graves near the altar. He asks about the tomb of the prophet who had predicted these events, and the people identify it. Josiah orders that the prophet's bones be left undisturbed.

God's Word, spoken generations earlier, has come true.

The chapter also records Josiah's destruction of the high places associated with Solomon's foreign wives, showing just how deeply idolatry had infiltrated Judah's history. He removes mediums, necromancers, household gods, and every other practice that violates the covenant.

Josiah then celebrates the Passover on a scale not seen since the days of the earlier kings. The writer emphasises that there had never been a Passover like this since the days of the judges.

Yet despite Josiah's extraordinary faithfulness, the chapter contains a sobering truth: God's judgment against Judah has not been cancelled.

The sins of Manasseh have brought such accumulated guilt upon the nation that even Josiah's reforms cannot permanently remove the coming judgment. Josiah can lead a remarkable revival, but he cannot undo generations of rebellion.

After Josiah dies in battle against Pharaoh Neco, his son Jehoahaz becomes king but reigns only three months before being taken to Egypt. Jehoiakim then becomes king under Egyptian authority and begins another period of wickedness.

The contrast is heartbreaking. One of Judah's greatest revivals is followed almost immediately by another collapse.

2 Kings 23 therefore presents both the power and limitation of reform. Josiah demonstrates what wholehearted obedience looks like, but his reign also proves that even the best human king cannot permanently solve the problem of sin.

Ultimately, Josiah points us toward Jesus Christ, the greater King.

Josiah finds God's Law and responds by tearing down idols. Jesus perfectly fulfils God's Law and ultimately destroys the power of sin and death. Josiah restores the Passover; Jesus transforms the Passover into the Lord's Supper and becomes the true Passover Lamb. Josiah leads the people in covenant renewal; Jesus establishes the new covenant through His blood.

And while Josiah's revival cannot prevent Judah's coming judgment, Christ accomplishes what Josiah could never do: He bears judgment Himself.

The chapter therefore leaves us with a powerful question: What would it look like for us to pursue God with the same wholeheartedness as Josiah? Yet it also reminds us that our hope cannot ultimately rest in our own reform. We need the King whose obedience is perfect and whose sacrifice is sufficient.

Josiah could cleanse the temple. Jesus cleanses His people.
