Ephesians 5:21–33 — Submission isn't a leash the strong hand to the weak; it's the shape of a Spirit-filled life, given and returned. Brian Combs continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.

Picking up right where Matt left off with being filled with the Spirit, Brian shows how that fullness works itself out in verse 21: submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ — a call for everyone in the room, not just wives. He walks through what that submission actually looks like in a marriage, sharing his own story of trusting God through a season of uncertain provision, then unpacks how Paul reframes headship — not authority that takes, but love that gives itself up, the way Christ gave himself for the church. From there he traces "leave and hold fast" back to Genesis, showing marriage as a picture of the gospel itself, meant to put something on display for the world.

A few things to carry into your week:

- Submission flows out of being filled with the Spirit — it isn't forced from the outside, it's offered from within.

- Biblical headship looks like Christ's: love that gives itself up, not authority that takes.

- "Leave and hold fast" is strong, covenant language — our marriages are meant to take priority over every other claim on us.

- Marriage isn't just about us — it's a picture of the gospel, on display for the world to see.
