Fall Asleep to The Ancient Mysteries of Appalachia

Fall Asleep to The Ancient Mysteries of Appalachia

The Appalachian Mountains are among the oldest on Earth — formed roughly 480 million years ago, before trees existed, before any animal had walked on land, when colliding continents pushed peaks to Himalayan heights. Four hundred million years of rain and frost and root pressure have worn them down to the soft, rounded, forested ridges we see today. The gentleness is not how they were made. It is the shape of deep time doing its work. And inside those ancient ridges — in the caves, in the soil, on the stone — there are mysteries that have nothing to do with horror and everything to do with a landscape so old that the geology itself holds unanswered questions.

Tonight we sit with five of them. Stone walls running along Appalachian ridgelines for hundreds of meters, dry-stacked and undated, built by hands no one can identify — or possibly not built at all, sorted by frost heave over geological time. The Judaculla Rock in western North Carolina, a soapstone boulder covered in pre-Columbian carvings that Cherokee oral tradition associates with a powerful mountain figure, its symbols still legible and still unread by Western scholarship. The Brown Mountain Lights, luminous orbs reported above a Blue Ridge foothill for centuries, investigated by the U.S. Geological Survey twice, photographed by researchers, and still unexplained. The cave systems beneath the hollows, where bare footprints preserved in mud show that pre-Columbian people navigated by torchlight fifteen kilometers into the earth — adults and children — for reasons that the caves hold but do not explain. And the hum of the hollows themselves: a low, pervasive sound reported by residents of certain Appalachian valleys for generations, sitting at the threshold of hearing, present in some hollows and absent in others, never conclusively sourced.

The mountains do not need to be solved tonight. They have been wearing down for four hundred million years and they are not in a hurry. The stone walls are on the ridgelines, holding their shape in the dark. The cave footprints are in the mud where they have been for three thousand years. The lights are either appearing over Brown Mountain tonight or they are not — the mountain decides. Let the ridges hold you the way they hold everything — patiently, softly, in the dark. Rest in the hollow. Sleep.
