Fall Asleep to The Signals We've Never Been Able to Explain

Fall Asleep to The Signals We've Never Been Able to Explain

In the spring of 1960, a young astronomer named Frank Drake pointed a radio telescope at two nearby stars and listened for a signal that was not there. He listened for four months. He heard nothing. Then he kept listening. For over sixty years since, scientists have pointed increasingly powerful instruments at the sky — filtering satellite noise, GPS harmonics, cell phone interference, even the hum of microwave ovens — searching for a pattern in the radio spectrum that could not have been produced by any natural process. They have processed billions of signals. Nearly all of them have been explained. A handful have not.

Tonight we sit with the signals that remain. The Wow! Signal — seventy-two seconds of narrowband radio energy at the hydrogen line frequency, detected by a university telescope in Ohio in 1977, thirty times stronger than the background noise, matching every criterion for an artificial transmission, never detected again despite hundreds of searches of the same patch of sky. BLC1 — a narrowband signal detected from the direction of Proxima Centauri in 2019 by the most sophisticated SETI program ever built, present when the telescope pointed at the star and absent when it pointed away, analyzed for over a year before being attributed, probabilistically, to complex terrestrial interference. Fast radio bursts — millisecond blasts of energy arriving from billions of light-years away, some repeating on clockwork cycles, partially linked to magnetars but not fully explained. And 'Oumuamua — the first known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, elongated, dry, slightly accelerating on its way out, gone now and carrying its ambiguity with it into interstellar space.

The telescopes are still listening. The algorithms are still running. If a signal arrives tonight that survives every test for interference, it will be in the data in the morning. The instruments do not tire. They do not need you to be awake. The universe is either speaking in a language we haven't learned to hear, or it is quiet in a way that is its own kind of answer. Either way, the silence is very old and very vast and the dish is pointed at the sky and the desert is dark and the stars are steady. Let the telescope listen. Let the silence hold you. Rest.
