Fall Asleep to The Animals That Were Myths Until Someone Found Them

Fall Asleep to The Animals That Were Myths Until Someone Found Them

The gorilla was a myth for twenty-three centuries. Carthaginian sailors reported it around 500 BCE. European naturalists dismissed the accounts as exaggeration or confusion with chimpanzees. In 1847, a missionary in Gabon obtained skulls from local hunters, and the largest primate on Earth finally entered the scientific record. The communities who shared its forest had known about it the entire time. They had names for it in dozens of languages. They knew its diet, its behavior, its family structure. The gorilla was not hidden from the people who lived alongside it. It was hidden only from the institutions that required a published description before they would acknowledge an animal's existence.

Tonight we sit with six animals that followed the same pattern. The giant squid, reported by sailors for a thousand years, formally described in 1857, not filmed alive until 2012. The Komodo dragon, known to every islander on Komodo, unknown to Western zoology until a colonial officer investigated a rumor in 1910. The coelacanth, declared extinct for sixty-six million years until a fisherman pulled one from the Indian Ocean in 1938 — local fishermen in the Comoros had been catching them for generations and were not surprised. The okapi, described accurately by Mbuti communities in the Ituri Forest and dismissed as folklore until a British naturalist sent skins to London in 1901. And the saola, a large forest mammal in the mountains of Vietnam discovered in 1992 and still barely known — photographed by camera traps a handful of times, never observed in the wild for a sustained period, one of the rarest large animals on Earth, living in a mountain forest that science has barely entered.

In every case, local people knew. In every case, institutional science did not believe until a specimen arrived. The gorilla is in its sleeping nest tonight. The giant squid is drifting a thousand meters below the surface. The coelacanth is hovering in a cave at the edge of the continental shelf, doing exactly what its ancestors did four hundred million years ago. The saola is somewhere in a mountain forest — we do not know where, exactly. It is there. It is real. It does not need us to believe in it. Let the forest hold you the way it holds them. Rest.
