Fall Asleep to What Lives at the Bottom of the Ocean Mystery

Fall Asleep to What Lives at the Bottom of the Ocean Mystery

More than seventy percent of the ocean floor has never been mapped to modern survey standards. We have higher-resolution maps of Mars. The unmapped portion — roughly 267 million square kilometers — is nearly twice the area of all dry land on Earth. An undersea mountain the size of a small city could be sitting on the bottom right now and no satellite would show it, because electromagnetic radiation does not penetrate seawater. The only way to map the ocean floor is to put a sonar instrument in the water and listen to the echo. It is slow work. The ocean is very large. And in the small fraction that has been surveyed, the discoveries have consistently been stranger than anything anyone predicted.

Tonight we sit with what the ocean has given up so far. Hydrothermal vents discovered in 1977 near the Galápagos Rift — fissures erupting superheated mineral water at over 400 degrees, surrounded by ecosystems of giant tube worms, clams, and shrimp running entirely on chemical energy from the Earth's interior, no sunlight required, rewriting where life is possible on this planet and others. The Bloop — an ultra-low-frequency sound powerful enough to be detected across five thousand kilometers of ocean, recorded in 1997, eventually attributed to the fracturing of an Antarctic iceberg, alongside a catalog of other deep-ocean sounds that have never been identified. The Mariana Trench, where the Challenger Deep drops to nearly eleven thousand meters and fewer than twenty-five people have ever visited — where amphipods and giant single-celled organisms live at a thousand atmospheres of pressure alongside a plastic bag and candy wrappers that arrived before most scientific instruments did. And the abyssal plains — the flattest, most featureless landscape on Earth, covering sixty percent of the planet's surface, sitting in permanent darkness, receiving a slow continuous rain of particles from the surface at a rate of one centimeter per thousand years.

The Seabed 2030 project is filling in the map, sonar line by sonar line. The submersibles are going deeper. The hydrophones are still listening. But tonight the abyssal plain is doing what it has always done — sitting in the dark, flat and cold and patient, accumulating sediment one particle at a time, in no hurry, with no urgency, the most common landscape on Earth and the least visited. Let the flatness hold you. Let the slow rain of particles be the last thing you imagine — drifting down through kilometers of water, landing softly on a surface that has been receiving them for longer than anything on the surface has been alive. Rest on it. Sleep.
