Kolhatkar, an award-winning multimedia journalist based in Pasadena, hosts the nationally syndicated program Rising Up With Sonali. Born in the UAE to Indian parents, she previously worked as an astrophysicist before moving into broadcast journalism in 2002. Breaking ICE collects her interviews with organizers, lawyers, labor leaders, artists, and scholars. The book traces both the human cost of enforcement and the tactics communities are using to protect neighbors, document abuses, and challenge the broader policy direction. Kolhatkar places particular emphasis on Los Angeles as a testing ground and a site of resistance.
