The Presentation — Albert Speculates About Monte Cristo (The Count of Monte Cristo, Chapter 41 – Part 14)

The Presentation — Albert Speculates About Monte Cristo (The Count of Monte Cristo, Chapter 41 – Part 14)

In The Count of Monte Cristo, Mercédès presses Albert to describe not Monte Cristo’s title, but the man himself.

Albert compares the count to one of Byron’s tragic heroes, imagining a brilliant adventurer shaped by mystery and hardship. He even wonders whether Monte Cristo’s island might shelter smugglers and pirates, yet insists that none of it diminishes the count’s extraordinary presence. When Mercédès asks his age, Albert guesses he is only thirty-five or thirty-six—a reply she immediately finds impossible.

Albert offers theories, but Mercédès seems to be searching for something far more certain.
