When you hear the brand name Mammut, what product do you think of?

I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you said: Ropes.

Founded in 1862 in Switzerland, the company initially produced ropes primarily for agriculture.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that the company shifted focus to mountaineering ropes and began trading under the name Mammut in 1952.

While Mammut has expanded its product offerings substantially since the 1950s, ropes remain a big part of the company's identity and something customers expect to see developed further.

Part of that development goes beyond rope performance and into harder questions about the environmental impact of making them.

And those are the questions we tackle with our guest, Tobias Steinegger, the head of corporate responsibility at Mammut.

Tobias grew up near the Swiss Alps and developed an early passion for the outdoors, shaping his commitment to nature and preserving these environments. In his role at Mammut, he leads the company’s responsibility agenda, focusing on climate strategy, circular business models, and sustainable materials.
