The Generational Divide: Migration, Identity and Building Mutual Understanding

This discussion examines how migration experiences differ across generations and why older and newer migrants sometimes see the world differently. It explores long-term identity formation, integration, community expectations, economic realities, and the shared values that can help bridge generational divides. It encourages respectful dialogue, personal integrity, and recognising the contributions made by every generation.

Disclaimer: This discussion aims to understand perspectives, not excuse harmful behaviour or stereotype any group. It is also important to recognise that some long-established migrants may experience emotional exhaustion after helping others. Imagine someone who has helped new migrants find jobs, helped with writing references, explained Australian workplace culture, helped people settle, and given advice. If those experiences are mostly positive, they often continue helping. But if, over many years, they repeatedly feel taken for granted, used, ignored, betrayed or blamed, they may eventually think, "I'm exhausted." Not because they're cruel, but because they're emotionally worn down. They may become more cautious about helping new people. That isn't necessarily prejudice—it can also be a form of emotional self-protection. At the same time, try to judge individuals by their own actions.
