The larger problem exposed by the messages was that the FBI director appeared to be spending significant energy fighting a public-relations war over Epstein rather than simply letting the evidence and investigative record speak for themselves. The criticism had been fueled by frustration over delayed releases, redactions and earlier promises from administration figures that the Epstein material would produce major revelations.
