USS Princeton and Taffy 3 Archival Footage – Episode 616

This week Seth Paridon and Jon Parshall take a break from the Philippines to look at some archival footage. First, The guys take a look at footage from the USS Birmingham, a Cleveland class light cruiser that saw a tremendous amount of action in the Pacific. Daily life aboard a light cruiser such as loading ammunition and other mundane activities are highlighted, along with, Birmingham's shore bombardment of Tinian Town in June 1944. After that we take a look at some archival footage from the Battle of the Philippine Sea including some incredibly awesome shots of two very, very pretty battleships. Next up, the footage takes us to the battle of Leyte Gulf where we follow the demise of the USS Princeton, and talk about the tremendous amount of damage that Birmingham suffered when the aircraft carriers torpedo magazine cooked off. Last but certainly not least we take a look at some absolutely amazing footage shot aboard USS Kitkun Bay during the Battle off Samar. In the footage we see a forest of enormous Japanese shell splashes rising around USS Gambier Bay and USS White Plains that are all waaay too close for comfort.
