Why Stoughton PD’s First Story About Sandra Birchmore Doesn’t Add Up

The first investigators to look at Sandra Birchmore's death called it suicide the same day they found her. A twenty-three-year-old pregnant woman with a duffel bag strap around her neck tied to a closet doorknob. No autopsy yet. No phone examined. No DNA compelled from the last person captured on surveillance entering her building.Federal prosecutors allege that person was Matthew Farwell — a Stoughton detective and union president who allegedly began a physical relationship with Sandra through the department's own youth program when she was fifteen.The department behind that investigation has a record that never made national news. On-duty shakedowns. Convicted chiefs. FBI wires. A deputy chief's compromising photos emailed to every officer and spouse. A sergeant's truck killing a seventy-four-year-old — the explanation a lemon seed — acquitted and back on duty.The FBI found Farwell's DNA on the ligature. Trial starts October 5 in Boston.
