The Great Integration

The Great Integration

How Big Pharma Is Adopting, Acquiring, and Competing with Deep Tech

What does a century-old pharmaceutical company do when the future arrives from a technology company?

In this episode of The Quantum Leap, Dr. Nirdosh Jagota examines how the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies are responding to artificial intelligence, advanced computing, biological data platforms, and emerging deep-tech capabilities.

Four major strategies are shaping this transition: buying valuable data, building internal computing infrastructure, licensing external algorithms, and becoming technology platforms themselves. Through examples involving Roche, Genentech, Amgen, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, GSK, Isomorphic Labs, Recursion, and other industry players, the episode explores what these strategies reveal about the future of pharmaceutical research.

Dr. Jagota also looks beyond the enormous headline values attached to AI drug-discovery agreements. Multi-billion-dollar announcements often include conditional milestone payments that may never be reached, while the actual upfront investment is considerably smaller. Understanding that distinction is essential for evaluating what pharmaceutical companies are truly paying for—and how much uncertainty remains.

The discussion also examines why major pharmaceutical companies have generally preferred partnerships, licences, equity investments, proprietary data, and internal computing infrastructure over acquiring entire AI drug-discovery platforms.

Despite rapid technological progress, the clinical evidence remains incomplete. No medicine discovered entirely through an end-to-end artificial intelligence process has yet received FDA or EMA approval, and the strongest performance gains appear earlier in development rather than in the more difficult stages of clinical validation.

The Great Integration presents a measured look at the infrastructure, investment, partnerships, and strategic decisions connecting traditional pharmaceutical companies with the emerging deep-tech ecosystem.
