Am I Alive? The Resurrection of William Kriel

In January 1870, ten thousand spectators packed the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, to watch the public hanging of William Kriel—a violent butcher who had murdered his ailing wife in front of her mother and somehow survived pumping multiple bullets into his own skull during a botched suicide attempt. Yet, the drop of the gallows trap proved to be only the opening chapter of Kentucky’s most shocking resurrection legend. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy untangles the macabre aftermath of Kriel's execution: dark rumors of midnight body-snatchers raiding Cave Hill Cemetery, a controversial Cincinnati physician obsessed with human heads, and a clandestine medical room where a galvanic battery was allegedly hooked to the killer's freshly hanged corpse. Did electrical currents and rogue scientists genuinely shock a condemned murderer back to life on an operating table, allowing a revived dead man to board a midnight train out of town, or was it a terrifying nineteenth-century nightmare born from the era's darkest Frankenstein-esque fears?
