Fall Asleep to The Mountains No One Is Allowed to Climb

Mount Kailash rises 6,638 meters from the Tibetan Plateau, sacred to four religions simultaneously — Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bön. Tens of thousands of pilgrims circle it every year on the kora, a 52-kilometer circumambulation that takes days on foot. No one climbs it. No one has ever climbed it. The mountain is not the tallest in the Himalayas, not the steepest, not the most technically demanding. It is unclimbed because every tradition that holds it sacred agrees on one thing: the summit is not for human feet. Four religions, one mountain, zero ascents — not a failure of mountaineering but a success of reverence.

Tonight we sit with six mountains that are protected by the cultures and governments that live beside them — peaks whose summits are left empty not because they are unreachable, but because reaching them would violate something that matters more than the view from the top. Uluru in central Australia, climbed by tourists for decades while the Anangu people asked them to stop, its route permanently closed in October 2019, its summit now empty, its stories protected, its color still shifting from ochre to red to purple with the light. Gangkhar Puensum in Bhutan, 7,570 meters, the tallest unclimbed mountain in the world, closed by a government that measures national progress by happiness rather than height. Machapuchare in Nepal, its perfect fishtail summit visible from a lakeside hotel in Pokhara, seen by millions of trekkers every year, summited by no one since a 1957 expedition turned back 50 meters from the top. Mount Athos in northern Greece, governed by the same monastic community for over a thousand years, its forests pristine, its Byzantine libraries largely uncatalogued, its access restricted by rules older than most nations. And Taranaki in New Zealand — a near-perfect volcanic cone granted legal personhood, recognized by law as a living ancestor of the local Māori iwi, a mountain that is, in the eyes of the legal system, a person with rights and dignity.

In a species that has climbed Everest and walked on the Moon and sent probes to the edge of the solar system, the decision to leave a summit unclimbed is an act of restraint so unusual it deserves its own kind of reverence. The pilgrims are circling Kailash tonight. The desert around Uluru is cooling. The cloud is wrapping Gangkhar Puensum. The fishtail is a silhouette above a lake reflecting stars. The monasteries are dark. Taranaki is standing on the coast, holding its dignity in the quiet of the night. Let the summits be empty. Let the restraint be the story. The mountains do not need you on top of them. They need only to be what they are — stone and snow and cloud and the quiet that gathers at altitude where the air is thin and the sky is close and nothing moves except the wind. Rest at the base. Sleep.
