In August 1985, twenty-two-year-old narrator moves into an old Larkspur Road split-level with his parents and discovers an unnaturally cold, sealed cast-iron coal chute door in the basement. Driven by boredom, he unlatches the door against his father's advice, unleashing a terrifying supernatural sequence: he becomes trapped in the basement as the room's temperature drops precipitously, jars explode, soot spews, and an unseen entity aggressively drags itself through the heating ducts.Barely escaping the escalating wreckage, the narrator crawls up through the narrow, freezing coal chute to safety in the backyard, only to find the basement completely untouched and undamaged the next day. Fearing what resides beneath, he lies about the incident to his parents, prompting his father to permanently seal the chute before the family sells the house two years later.Written By Brett Schumacher
