Air India Flight 182 - Part 1: A world of trust, routine, and invisible vulnerabilities

At thirty-one thousand feet, trust is built into every journey. Before disaster shattered that trust, Air India Flight 182 moved through the skies as just another routine crossing—ordinary, uneventful, and safe. But beneath the confidence of the jet age, something unseen was already at work.In the early months of nineteen eighty-five, Air India Flight 182 was simply part of the backdrop of modern travel. Its route, running from Toronto and Montreal to Delhi with a stop in London, was so familiar that travelers rarely questioned its safety. Passengers boarded with wedding gifts, business papers, or children in tow, trusting that the flight’s only challenge would be staying comfortable for the long hours ahead. The jet itself—a Boeing 747 named Emperor Kanishka—symbolized the power and reliability of commercial aviation. Hundreds of people, protected by pressurized cabins and redundant safety systems, moved across continents as a matter of routine. Airlines promised that every check-in, every baggage transfer, and every customs inspection was part of an unbroken chain. That was the expectation. But the very design that made these journeys possible also created a hidden vulnerability. A single device, small enough to fit in a suitcase, could turn this system of trust into a weapon, needing only to pass through the ordinary process of baggage handling and be left unnoticed in the hold.Learn more at: https://thedisasterarchive.com/disaster/air-india-flight-182
