Trump & Zelenskyy Meet—What Did They Actually Agree On?

I break down President Trump’s UN General Assembly remarks and his public meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in New York. Trump said Congress had provided him with new tariff authorities associated with Senator Lindsey Graham, but framed their use as conditional. When asked whether Ukraine could regain all occupied territory, he declined to define a settlement, saying only that the sides would make a deal.

I also examine the strategic tension in Trump’s response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and fuel infrastructure: he acknowledged a serious hit on Russia while warning about higher diesel prices. Zelensky pressed the urgency of ending the war before winter, while his discussions with Emmanuel Macron included additional SAMP/T systems, interceptor production, and the Freya missile-defense project. Finally, I assess Trump’s evasive response to Zelensky’s proposed Miami G20 meeting with Putin and the tentative discussion of Patriot missile production in Ukraine.
