Why Kohberger's Family Believes His Confession Was Coerced

On September 17, the Kohberger family — parents Michael and Mary Ann, sisters Amanda and Mel — issued a formal statement through two retained attorneys to ABC News. They said Bryan's confession to the murders of four University of Idaho students was coerced by his own defense team. They want it thrown out. They want a trial.

Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He told the judge under oath that no one forced him. He confirmed he killed Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. He signed a written factual basis admitting the killings were willful, deliberate, premeditated, and with malice. He waived his right to appeal.

His handwritten petition for post-conviction relief, filed from prison on July 27, 2026, names defense attorneys Anne Taylor, Elisa Massoth, and Bicka Barlow. He alleges they coerced his confession, withheld hair evidence, fabricated a story about death-row conditions, and told him it was legal to plead guilty to crimes he didn't commit. He wrote that his family was in the room during "most" of those discussions.

The hair he calls hidden was examined by his own defense expert, Ruth Ballard. She found it morphologically consistent with victim Ethan Chapin's own hair. That analysis was filed with the court by Taylor on June 6, 2025 — one month before Kohberger signed the deal. "Clumps of hair," his description of the evidence, appears in no court or police record. It appears in a bestselling book.

His family's civil attorney framed the plea as a "business decision" driven by fear. Prosecutors call the entire effort a "fishing expedition." Kohberger's team has filed a motion to disqualify Judge Hippler, citing his sentencing comments. A hearing on that motion is set for October 15. An evidentiary hearing — if it survives — is scheduled for June 17, 2027.
