Kohberger's Family Hired Lawyers to Fight His Own Confession

Bryan Kohberger confessed under oath to murdering four University of Idaho students. His family just hired their own lawyers to say the confession was forced.

On September 17, parents Michael and Mary Ann Kohberger and sisters Amanda and Mel issued a coordinated statement through Pennsylvania law firm Amori & Associates and New York civil attorney Jason Goldman. They told ABC News they want "the complete and unvarnished truth" through "a proper trial." Goldman framed the guilty plea as a "business decision" driven by fear rather than guilt.

Kohberger's handwritten petition from prison alleges his defense team of Anne Taylor, Elisa Massoth, and Bicka Barlow coerced his confession, concealed hair evidence from the crime scene, and fabricated a story about death-row conditions. He wrote that his family was in the room during "most" of the attorney-client discussions. That detail cuts both ways: if the coercion happened in front of them, they'll be called to testify. If it didn't, their public statement is loyalty, not evidence. No contemporaneous complaint exists — no call to the court, no letter to the bar, no motion for new counsel.

The hair he calls his proof of innocence was examined by his own defense expert, Ruth Ballard. She found it morphologically consistent with the victim Ethan Chapin's own hair — not an unknown attacker's. That report was filed with the court by Taylor on June 6, 2025, a month before the plea was signed. The phrase "clumps of hair" appears in no forensic record — only in a bestselling book about the case.

At his plea hearing, Kohberger told the judge he was not coerced and was guilty. He said it four times — once per victim. Prosecutors are calling the post-conviction effort a "fishing expedition." An evidentiary hearing is set for June 2027.
