Back to School Is Different Now: Kids, Screens, Bullying & the Pressures Parents Are Navigating

Going back to school isn't just about new schedules, school supplies and getting everyone out the door on time. Kids today are navigating a world where school, friendships, social media, gaming and their online lives are increasingly connected—and where problems at school don't necessarily end when they get home.

In this episode, Toni Clemmings sits down with Jason McNish, a tenured educator, and Tianna Brown, a child and youth counsellor, for an open conversation about what kids, teens and parents are facing as another school year begins.

We look at how the school experience has changed over the past 5, 10 and 20 years and ask whether kids today are actually under more pressure, or whether we're simply better at recognizing and talking about it.

The conversation moves into screens and technology—not simply asking “How much screen time is too much?” but looking at what kids are actually doing with that time. Schoolwork, gaming, talking with friends and endlessly scrolling aren't necessarily the same thing. So, are we trying to reduce screen time, or should we be helping kids develop a healthier relationship with technology?

We also talk about bullying and cyberbullying, including an important distinction that sometimes gets lost: not every negative interaction between kids is bullying. Conflict, teasing, exclusion, hurtful behaviour and bullying can require different responses. The challenge for parents is figuring out when kids need support, when adults need to intervene—and when kids need an opportunity to work through something difficult themselves.

That leads into a broader conversation about resilience. Should we be more willing to let our kids lose, fail, be disappointed and experience discomfort? Protecting our kids matters, but so does giving them opportunities to develop the tools to deal with situations that don't go their way.

We discuss recognizing changes in behaviour, talking to kids before there's a problem, knowing their online and social worlds, setting reasonable boundaries around technology, communicating with teachers and schools, and knowing when it may be time to seek additional support.

The goal isn't to provide all the answers. It's to have a practical conversation about raising and supporting kids in a school and social environment that continues to change.

A note about this conversation: Toni, Jason and Tianna are speaking from their own perspectives and experiences. Jason brings observations from his years working in education, Tianna from her experience working with children and youth, and Toni from the perspective of a parent with a previous academic background in psychology. None of the participants are presenting themselves as experts in the subjects discussed or offering professional mental-health, educational or parenting advice. The conversation includes personal observations, professional experiences, anecdotal examples and high-level discussion intended to encourage further conversation and reflection.

The takeaway: Back-to-school preparation isn't only backpacks, schedules and supplies. Helping kids develop resilience, preparing them mentally and emotionally, paying attention when something changes, and making sure they know they have somewhere safe to turn are just as important.
