The Political Desk: Who is policing the police? The state of SAPS

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Guy Lamb, criminologist, political scientist, and commissioner on the National Planning Commission, about the state of policing in South Africa.

The discussion looks beyond the recent killings of women around Kempton Park, the KwaMakhutha mass shooting and the scrutiny facing senior police and government officials, to examine the wider challenges of violent crime, police leadership, resources, accountability and institutional culture.

They also unpack what repeated allegations and investigations involving the police mean for public trust, and whether South Africa’s policing system has the capacity to prevent and respond effectively to violent crime.

702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg-based talk radio station.
