The Boy Who Flew Aeroflot 593

In 1994, Aeroflot Flight 593, a state-of-the-art Airbus A310, crashed into the Siberian wilderness, killing all 75 people on board.
The disaster began with an extraordinary lapse in judgment when the captain allowed his 15-year-old son to sit at the controls during the flight. His actions unintentionally triggered a partial disengagement of the autopilot, leaving the highly experienced crew unaware that the aircraft was no longer responding as they expected.
As the plane entered a steep and increasingly dangerous bank, the pilots struggled to understand what was happening. By the time they recognized the situation, the aircraft had entered an unrecoverable dive.
The investigation revealed how human error, unfamiliar automated systems, and inadequate awareness of the aircraft's behavior combined to turn a brief family moment into a devastating tragedy. The crash became a lasting lesson in the importance of automation training, cockpit discipline, and effective upset-recovery procedures.
