Crucial Conversations on Self-Care and Partnership Dynamics

Crucial Conversations on Self-Care and Partnership Dynamics

Episode #1193

When does taking care of yourself become abandoning your partner, and when does constantly taking care of everyone else become self-sacrifice?

In this episode of The TPM Show, Doug Holt and Christopher Hansen tackle a question many husbands and fathers struggle with: how do you make time for yourself without leaving your wife feeling like she's carrying the family alone?

Doug explains how two unhealthy patterns can develop. On one side, a man works hard, provides for his family, and quietly expects something in return. Without ever discussing those expectations with his wife, resentment builds when his needs aren't met. On the other side, a man becomes the martyr. He handles everything, puts himself last, and keeps pushing until he eventually burns out.

Neither creates the partnership he actually wants.

Doug and Chris discuss covert contracts, communication, burnout, and why healthy self-care isn't about checking out from your responsibilities. It's about communicating with your wife, understanding how your choices affect the family, and creating agreements that allow both partners to get what they need.

Chris also shares his own tendency to carry too much until his wife reminds him to slow down and do something that fills him back up. That leads to a practical discussion about scheduling self-care, rediscovering activities you genuinely enjoy, and surrounding yourself with men who will hold you accountable.
