Kohberger's Family Says the Guilty Plea Was WHAT?!

Bryan Kohberger admitted guilt in court, but his family now supports a challenge to that plea while alleged unredacted Idaho crime-scene photos are reaching online creators. One dispute concerns a confession he wants undone. The other concerns images the families and the state fought to keep from unrestricted public circulation.

The photo controversy escalated on September 15, 2026. The Latah County Prosecutor's Office, Moscow Police and Idaho State Police said unredacted photographs had allegedly been provided to journalists and social-media creators by an unknown source. A YouTube host with more than 9,000 subscribers had already told followers, "We have them," and said she was waiting for more.

The alleged leak came after Idaho tightened access. Judge Megan Marshall required bodies and immediately surrounding blood to be blacked out in City of Moscow releases. Idaho State Police then posted nearly 2,800 images in January 2026 before removing them the same day.

The Goncalves family said the images were live by the end of a 12-minute warning call. Idaho later exempted death-investigation photographs from public disclosure.

On September 17, Kohberger's family said it supports his effort to withdraw the 2025 plea and wants the complete truth tested through a trial. Kohberger alleges that his lawyers pushed a false confession through bad advice, false promises and threats. But during the July 2, 2025 plea hearing, he told Judge Steven Hippler that no one threatened him, no one told him to be untruthful, and he was pleading guilty voluntarily because he was guilty. He also said he was satisfied with counsel.

Kohberger has also cited hair recovered from Ethan Chapin's right hand. Defense expert Ruth Ballard had already examined one hair from that location and found it morphologically consistent with Chapin's own reference hair. The court must now decide what his new evidence can prove against the plea record, while authorities still do not publicly identify the alleged source of the unredacted images.
