Les Wexner And His Early Patronage Of Jeffrey Epstein

Les Wexner was one of the most important figures in Jeffrey Epstein’s rise from relatively obscure money manager to extraordinarily wealthy and well-connected financier. Epstein became deeply involved in Wexner’s financial affairs in the 1980s and was eventually granted sweeping power of attorney over the retail billionaire’s assets, an extraordinary level of trust that gave Epstein access, legitimacy and influence far beyond what he had previously possessed. Wexner also transferred the Manhattan mansion at 9 East 71st Street to Epstein, and Epstein’s association with Wexner opened doors into elite financial, business and social circles. For years, Epstein’s connection to Wexner functioned as a powerful credential, allowing him to present himself as a trusted adviser to one of the richest men in America.

That relationship later became one of the central unanswered questions surrounding Epstein’s wealth and status. Wexner has said he severed ties with Epstein in 2007 and later accused him of misappropriating more than $46 million from his family’s finances, while insisting that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s sexual abuse. But by then, the benefits Epstein had drawn from the relationship were substantial: money, property, prestige, access and the credibility that came with being publicly associated with Wexner. Whatever Wexner understood about Epstein’s private conduct, his patronage played a major role in transforming Epstein’s public image and financial standing, helping create the platform from which Epstein built the network that later became synonymous with his crimes.
