Wow! Signal: The 72-Second Burst That Never Returned

In 1977, the Wow! Signal burst from deep space for 72 seconds—and then vanished, leaving behind only the cryptic sequence 6EQUJ5. Explore why this narrowband radio signal raised hopes of alien contact, how a magnetar and hydrogen cloud might offer a natural explanation, and why the mystery still demands a closer listen today.

On August 15, 1977, Ohio State’s Big Ear radio telescope detected the Wow! Signal, a powerful narrowband radio burst from the direction of Sagittarius. It lasted 72 seconds, appeared near the 1,420 MHz hydrogen line, and then never returned—leaving behind one of SETI’s most enduring mysteries.

Key takeaways:
• “6EQUJ5” recorded changing signal strength, not an alien message.
• The 72 seconds may reflect Big Ear’s viewing window, not transmission length.
• No follow-up search has independently confirmed the signal.
• A magnetar flare energizing a cold hydrogen cloud is one possible natural explanation.
• The Wow! Signal helped strengthen modern standards for repeatability and verification.
