Robert Sorrells: “From the Big Screen to the Big House” | MURDERISH Ep. 127

A character actor who appeared in over 100 films and TV shows between the early 60s and late 80s, Robert Sorrells made a living playing bit parts in big productions: classics like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone. No matter the plot, the roles typically ended the same for Sorrells―with his character either firing a bullet, or taking one himself. His early filmography reads like an advertisement for the NRA: Gunfight in Abilene, Mosby’s Marauders, Death of a Gunfighter, The Ride to Hangman’s Tree. In a disturbing case of life imitating art, Sorrells, at the age of 74, gunned down two men at a bar near his home in Simi Valley, California, killing one and badly wounding the other. His victim: A 45-year-old painting contractor and father of one. The shocking July 2004 murder shined a spotlight on the psychology of aging actors, and begged the question: did a lifetime of being around fake movie violence make Sorrells more inclined to commit the real-life kind? Or, were the characters he portrayed all those years on film closer to reality than those around him realized? Tonia Bales, Dirty John’s First Wife | Murderish 009

In this episode of Murderish, I interview John Meehan’s (AKA Dirty John) first wife, Tonia Bales. You might remember Tonia from the wildly popular Dirty John podcast, where listeners got to hear recorded phone calls between John and Tonia. John’s threats to Tonia during those calls made the hair on my arms stick up. During the interview, Tonia talks about those phone calls and her motivation behind staying on the phone with John even after he threatened her.   MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Justin Hopper Murder | Murderish - Episode 008

In December of 1992, Justin Hopper, was making plans to move and get a fresh start. He was a high school senior at the time when he found himself in a dangerous situation. Justin had been selling drugs, and his instincts told him he needed to get out of that lifestyle before something bad happened. Justin was much more than a drug dealer, though. He was a kind-hearted, caring guy with a sentimental side. He was a football player who maintained good grades in school. Justin shared his plans to escape the lifestyle he was living with his close friend, Suzi. Sadly, Justin had no idea that he only had a few more weeks to live after sharing his plans with Suzi. Justin would never get the fresh start he desired because two gun-loving classmates had other plans for him.MURDERISH now has a Patreon page!
