What Caleb Flynn’s Own Devices Caught Him Doing the Night He Killed Ashley

Caleb Flynn’s own body was the crime scene his devices mapped. His Apple Watch logged roughly 200 steps in the hour before his 911 call — movement while he claimed to be sleeping in his daughters’ bedroom. A spike of 346 steps around 2:30 a.m. His Oura ring contradicted his sleep claims. His AirPods connection and disconnection times tracked him through the house. He forgot that every device on his body was a witness.

A Miami County jury convicted Flynn on all nine counts — aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence — in roughly two hours. Ashley Flynn was shot twice in the back of the head while she slept, their two daughters in the next room. The prosecution had seven days of testimony and forty witnesses. The defense had nothing — zero witnesses called.

Flynn sent more than 107,000 texts to Alleigha Botner, a 21-year-old worship intern he met at his own church. Prosecutors printed them into 34 books. He called Ashley “douche” and “spawn of Satan.” He texted about wanting her dead. The night before the murder: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow, February 16, a day I’ll never forget.” Hours later: “It’s happening.”

He tried to erase the trail. Deleted messaging apps, scrubbed social media, wiped the AI app he used to write love songs for Botner days before the murder. Investigators pulled a full phone extraction and recovered every message, every timestamp, every location ping. His intruder story — that someone broke in through a window, shot Ashley, and fled with his gun — fell apart under neighborhood cameras that showed no one arriving, no one leaving. His side of the bed was undisturbed. The gun was never found. Flynn faces life without parole, with sentencing set for October 5.
