The miracle glide of Flight 236

In 2001, Air Transat Flight 236 was crossing the Atlantic Ocean when disaster struck: both engines suddenly lost power, leaving the aircraft with no way to continue under normal flight.
The crisis began with a massive fuel leak caused by improper engine maintenance. Mismatched hydraulic and fuel lines eventually ruptured, allowing the aircraft to lose its fuel at an alarming rate. Believing the problem might be a computer malfunction rather than a physical leak, the crew followed standard fuel-balancing procedures—unintentionally accelerating the loss of their remaining fuel.
With both engines dead and hundreds of miles of ocean below them, the pilots faced an almost impossible challenge. The aircraft became a powerless glider, and the passengers prepared for the terrifying possibility of ditching in the Atlantic.
Against extraordinary odds, the crew managed to glide the aircraft all the way to the Azores, achieving what became the longest successful powerless flight in commercial aviation history. The captain ultimately brought the aircraft down safely at a military air base, saving every person on board.
Flight 236 is a remarkable story of survival, but also a warning about how a chain of maintenance mistakes, misleading indications, human assumptions, and technical uncertainty can turn a seemingly manageable problem into a fight for hundreds of lives.
