The Etruscans — An Advanced Civilization in Central Italy — Sleep Podcast

West of Rome, on the low hills of the Tiber plain, a city of white tufa waits in the dusk. It has no name you can yet say — and it will take a long time to understand what you are standing in. This is the story of the Etruscans, the people who grew out of that plain, built the Rome you know, and then slowly, without a fire, went away.

We take it slowly. First the old question — where did they come from? — the Greek legends of Tyrrhenos and the great drought, and what the archaeology, the inscriptions, and the ancient DNA now say. Then the quiet birth of the culture: the cremations of the Villanovan villages, the ships that brought the east, and the black burnished pottery that made the plain's own. The land and its cities — the twelve-city league and the sanctuary no one has ever found, the language that belongs to no family we know, the gold tablets from Pyrgi that anchor the names but do not open the door. The aristocratic families, and the women who reclined at the table beside the men. The painted tombs of Tarquinia, and the cheerful dead. The religion of the divided sky and the bronze liver. The sea, the coin, and the treasury at Delphi that no other Etruscan city was allowed to build. The battles at Alalia and at Cumae. The long siege and the fall of Veii, the city whose sculptor made the statues of the gods of Rome. And at last the city on the Tiber, which took their kings, their gods, their alphabet, and their way of asking the sky — and called them its own.

A slow, unhurried reading, for the edge of sleep. About sixty-five minutes.
