The Battle of Berlin: Germany's Last Stand

The Battle of Berlin: Germany's Last Stand

In April 1945, the Soviet Union’s military, better known as the Red Army, began attacking Berlin from the east, south, and north. Throughout WW2, Berlin was used as the Third Reich's base and, as such, its capture by the Allies was of utmost importance. Over 1.5 million Red Army soldiers participated in the assault and their leaders were ruthless, willing to deal with tremendous casualties if it meant inflicting as much damage as possible to Nazi Germany. The losses that came as a result of this final battle were enormous: over 81,000 Soviet troops were killed while researchers observed that as many as 100,000 German troops and 125,000 civilians were killed during the conflict. Though Hitler took his own life on April 30th, the Battle of Berlin continued until early May and is considered one of the most gruelling fights of the overall Second World War.
