4 Changes That Could Reshape Montrose City Government | Charter Amendment Debate

4 Changes That Could Reshape Montrose City Government | Charter Amendment Debate

This week on WKRP Montrose, the conversation turns to four proposed changes to the Montrose City Charter that voters will see on the November 3, 2026 ballot. (City of Montrose)

The mayor and a city council member join the discussion to explain their different perspectives on how these proposed amendments could affect the way Montrose conducts elections, limits elected service, and oversees key city positions.

The conversation covers:

• Municipal Elections: A proposal to move city elections from April to November of even-numbered years, including arguments about voter participation, election costs, and the potential impact of larger state and federal races.

• Term Limits: A proposed lifetime eight-year limit on elected service for City Council members, with differing views on fresh perspectives versus retaining experienced public servants.

• Police Chief Oversight: A proposal requiring City Council approval of the City Manager’s decision to appoint or discharge the Police Chief.

• City Clerk Oversight: A similar proposal requiring Council approval of the City Manager’s decision to appoint or discharge the City Clerk.

• Finding Common Ground: Despite their disagreements over the amendments, the officials discuss the importance of working together on issues such as the city budget and other community priorities.

The City of Montrose says the four proposed amendments were approved for placement on the November 3 coordinated election ballot. (City of Montrose)
