Murder in Missouri: The Case of Rowan Ford

In November 2007, the small community of Stella, Missouri, was devastated by the tragic abduction, rape, and murder of nine-year-old Rowan Ford. Her disappearance prompted a massive community and law enforcement search, ultimately leading authorities to discover her body hidden inside a local sinkhole known as Fox Cave. Suspicion immediately fell on her stepfather, David Spears, and a family friend, Christopher Collings, both of whom provided conflicting statements and varying confessions regarding their involvement in the heinous crime. Although Spears initially implicated himself, prosecutors ultimately dropped major charges against him due to a lack of physical evidence, securing a plea deal for lesser charges instead. Following a jury trial that detailed his severe childhood trauma and psychological disorders, Collings was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. After years of extensive appeals and denied clemency requests, Collings was executed by lethal injection in December 2024, finally bringing a painful chapter of partial justice to Rowan’s grieving family and community.
