Murder In Moscow: Bryan Kohberger And The Fantasist Theory

Forensic psychologist Dr. Joni Johnston argued that Bryan Kohberger appeared less like a criminal mastermind and more like an obsessive fantasist who became consumed with the idea of committing murder while overlooking basic steps that could have helped him avoid detection. Speaking to The U.S. Sun in January 2023, Johnston pointed to the evidence then described by investigators, including Kohberger allegedly driving his own Hyundai Elantra near the King Road residence, carrying his cellphone during portions of the relevant timeframe and leaving behind the knife sheath that authorities said contained DNA linking him to the crime scene. She believed the killings may have been planned for weeks or months, but suggested Kohberger’s attention was focused on elements that satisfied a fantasy — such as the weapon, clothing, mask, timing and manner of entering the house — rather than the practical details of avoiding capture. Johnston also rejected the assumption that Kohberger’s criminology studies would necessarily have taught him how to commit an undetectable crime, noting that his academic focus involved criminal behavior and psychology rather than forensic science. Her central theory was that obsession with carrying out the act overwhelmed the kind of common-sense precautions someone attempting to conceal a murder would ordinarily consider.

Johnston also focused on cellphone evidence that investigators said placed Kohberger’s phone in the general area of the King Road house at approximately 9 a.m. on November 13, hours after Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were killed. She theorized that if Kohberger did return to the area, it may have been less about retrieving the forgotten sheath and more about seeing whether the victims had been discovered and watching the aftermath of the killings begin to unfold. Johnston described that possibility as another extension of the fantasy, suggesting he may have wanted to relive the experience or observe the reaction to what had happened. She further speculated that Kohberger might have anonymously followed or participated in online discussions about the murders afterward, although claims linking him to accounts such as “Pappa Rodgers” or “InsideLooking” had not been established. Overall, Johnston portrayed the alleged behavior as that of someone intensely preoccupied with the experience of committing the crime and its aftermath, but whose fixation may have contributed to a series of mistakes that ultimately helped investigators identify him.
