Raymond Vaughn Drove Home That Saturday. A Tarp and Stones Covered Him.

Raymond Vaughn wrote the date on every tray of seedlings on his kitchen windowsill, because a tray without a date on it is just a tray of dirt. When a wildfire pushed him out of his house on Coldwater Creek Road, he waited for the first Saturday of the month and drove back to check on them. He never reached his friend's house that night. Over the days that followed, somebody else kept letting himself into that kitchen, and a county checkpoint waved the truck through every time.

Raymond Allen Vaughn, 44, taught ninth-grade biology at Keswick Falls Regional in Keswick Falls, Virginia. He drove home to Coldwater Creek Road on Saturday, January 1, 2022, during a wildfire that would close the corridor two days later, and did not return to the friend he was staying with. He was reported missing on January 4. On January 14, a man walking the Raymond Rice Trail with his dog found him in a culvert under a canvas tarp weighted at every edge with field stones. The medical examiner found injuries from blows to the back of the head.

The house had been entered and searched after he disappeared: a mug moved off its drying rack, a chair sitting off its own marks in the carpet, a tall pine bookshelf turned to face the wall. Behind that bookshelf was a compartment in the drywall holding a lockbox with four thousand dollars, a USB drive, and printed correspondence with a regional land trust about a disputed boundary and an access authorization that carried his name beneath it and that he had told the trust he never signed. Richard Barrett, 41, who ran a one-man repair business and held a financial interest in the company pursuing a competing purchase of the neighboring parcel, had been logged through the Stillwater Road checkpoint on January 4, 6, 9 and 11, on an emergency authorization arranged by a telephone caller the emergency-management office could not identify.

Barrett was arrested and, on January 28, gave a recorded statement lasting four hours. He admitted entering through a service door whose loose latch he had himself written up as still needing replacement, said Raymond came home while he was inside, and described striking him with a steel breaker bar and moving him to the culvert. He admitted making the call that got him back past the checkpoint on four later occasions, and said he had returned to look for the rest of Raymond's property documents. He maintained that he had gone in to search the house and not to harm anyone; the plea did not establish that account as true. On March 3 he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Harlan County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 32 years. A 2019 death on a trail in Wythe County, originally ruled accidental, was reopened after a tip following his arrest; no charge or finding in that case established his involvement.
