Fall Asleep to The Mel's Hole Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Mel's Hole Mystery

In February 1997, a caller on a late-night AM radio show described a hole on his rural property in the foothills west of Ellensburg, Washington — a hole he said went down more than fifteen miles without reaching bottom. No one has ever confirmed the caller's identity. No one has independently documented the hole. And the story has never stopped spreading. But the landscape where he said it was — the Columbia Plateau of eastern Washington — is built on something real and almost as difficult to believe: more than three hundred layers of ancient flood basalt, stacked over millions of years by eruptions that poured lava across the region in sheets, reaching a combined depth of more than three kilometers. Beneath the surface, lava tubes wind through the dark. Fractures carry snowmelt through corridors no one has mapped. The ground here has depth that predates any human story about it.

During the last ice age, catastrophic floods from glacial Lake Missoula roared across this plateau dozens of times, stripping the land to bare rock and carving channels hundreds of feet deep into the basalt — exposing the layered interior of the earth itself. Dry Falls, the scar of a waterfall that once dwarfed Niagara, still stands in the scablands, three and a half miles wide and four hundred feet tall, dry and silent. The deepest hole ever drilled by humans — the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia — reached less than eight miles before the rock grew too hot and too soft to continue. The real depth of the earth is larger than any single story can hold.

Tonight you follow the geology down through the basalt layers and the flood scars and the ancient lava tubes, past the folklore and the voice on the radio and the physics of AM signals that travel further in the dark. The Columbia Plateau stretches to every horizon beneath a sky dense with stars. The ground beneath you is millions of years old, and it holds its shape the way it always has — quietly, in the dark, whether anyone is measuring or not. The depth is there. You can rest on it.
