Murder In Moscow: A Content Creator Is Accused Of Manufacturing Evidence

In the weeks after the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in Moscow, Idaho, YouTube creator Joseph Morris was accused of manufacturing purported evidence and presenting it to viewers as though it came from the night of the killings. Morris posted audio that appeared to capture a distressed woman saying, “Stop it. Leave me alone,” and suggested that the recording came from the area around 1122 King Road and could represent one of the victims during the attack. Other true-crime creators quickly challenged the claim and traced the audio to an unrelated recording, demonstrating that it had not been captured at the murder scene. Morris was subsequently accused of editing and repackaging the clip to make it appear connected to the Moscow investigation, turning an unrelated piece of audio into what viewers could reasonably mistake for genuine evidence.

The incident became one of the clearest early examples of how misinformation surrounding the Moscow murders could move from speculation into the outright manufacture of supposed evidence. At the time, investigators were already dealing with an enormous volume of online rumors, false accusations and unverified material while trying to identify the killer, and Moscow police repeatedly warned that misinformation was creating distractions and harming people who had no connection to the crime. The Morris controversy was particularly serious because it did not simply involve offering a theory about the case; he was accused of taking unrelated material and presenting it in a way that made it appear evidentiary. Other creators publicly exposed the recording as fake, and the episode became a cautionary example of how the enormous online audience surrounding the murders created incentives for sensational content even when the material being circulated had no legitimate connection to the investigation.
