Prince Andrew Risks Major Legal Blowback With Challenge to Police Warrants (10/926)

Prince Andrew’s decision to challenge Thames Valley Police over the legality of search warrants used during raids on his properties was described as an extraordinary and risky legal strategy. Andrew was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations that he shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy. He has now asked the High Court to review whether the police acted lawfully when they searched his homes and seized evidence. Alisa Anderson, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s press secretary, called the move “mind blowing” and warned that it could backfire badly if Andrew loses, particularly because it puts his legal battle with police back into the public spotlight.

Former Metropolitan Police officer Graham Wettone said Andrew’s challenge appeared aimed at undermining the evidence gathered during those searches, because a ruling that the warrants were unlawful could potentially exclude seized material and disrupt the investigation. Wettone also stressed that the inquiry was complex, involved years of conduct, numerous witnesses and thousands of documents that investigators still had to review. The article also noted that Andrew remained largely isolated from the royal family, while King Charles had refused to pay the legal costs of the judicial review and had made clear that private financial support provided to Andrew should not be used for the case.
