Michigan Police Investigate Possible Serial Killer on Trail

Michigan authorities are actively investigating a string of five violent assaults targeting unhoused individuals along the Lansing River Trail between October 2025 and August 2026. Investigators noted a disturbing pattern connecting the victims, who were all white males between the ages of 22 and 70 assaulted in the early morning hours, primarily suffering severe facial trauma from blunt force impacts. Although police have apprehended a suspect named Edward Joseph Smith and charged him with an open murder count for the stabbing death of 22-year-old Daniel Lusk, they have not yet connected him to the remaining homicides. Chief Robert Backus stated that while the investigation remains entirely open and ongoing, law enforcement is carefully analyzing these incidents to determine if a potential serial killer is operating in the area.
