A region of 200,000 square miles in interior Alaska — bounded by Juneau, Anchorage, and Utqiaġvik — has one of the highest missing-persons rates in the United States. Over 20,000 people have been reported missing there since 1988. Many have never been found.

Tonight you’ll cross the Alaska Range from altitude, past Denali and the glaciers that swallow wreckage whole, and descend into a boreal forest so vast you could walk north from the last road for five hundred miles without meeting another. You’ll sit with the USGS magnetic anomaly maps that document compass deviation zones across the iron-rich Alaska Range, and with the Tlingit tradition of the Kushtaka — a culture’s precise, ancient knowledge of exactly how this landscape disorients and kills. You’ll learn the arithmetic of disappearance in a wilderness where muskeg swallows aircraft in a single season and glaciers carry what they take for decades before surrendering it miles away.
