The Straight Dope Show ep.439 WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson, Alien Distractions & DC Lanterns Review

El Uno and TraB the Wonder kick off Episode 439 of The Straight Dope Show by breaking down the media's endless cycle of sensationalized news without resolutions, pointing out how the government pushes UFO narratives to distract everyday citizens from inflation and rising grocery prices. The conversation takes a wild turn into climate change, the myth of Atlantis, and a hilarious historical reimagining of Jesus as a well-connected neighborhood hustler who always had "the plug".

Pivoting to sports, the duo praises A'ja Wilson for officially securing her MVP status and cementing her legacy, while breaking down the expansion draft strategy of the Golden State Valkyries and Angel Reese's undeniable locker room leadership. The hosts then rip into the NFL and the military-industrial complex, questioning why taxpayers fund stadium flyovers and giant flags while communities struggle, especially when the average three-hour football game only features about 10 minutes of actual action.

The episode rounds out with a heavy critique of tech companies bricking consumer hardware and hoarding engineering talent, followed by a glowing review of the grounded storytelling in DC's Lanterns. Finally, they swap stories about theater crowds losing their minds over Omarion in You Got Served, the dangers of letting your partner attend an Usher concert, and the strict necessity of gatekeeping California's best snacks.
